Story

Why Celebrate the Citrus Harvest in Yigo?

1. Yigo has history; Citrus orchards were found throughout Yigo historically and our elders ("manomko" in the native Chamorro language) share fond stories of this.  It is our mission to revitalize the citrus orchards and expand on it to every home.

2 Citrus continues to grow abundantly througout the village and can still be found at many of the homes, on road sides and in jungles growing wild!

3. Citrus is abundant throughout Yigo because it is an optimal location to grow it with its unique good drainage soils and high PH lime soil.  This is apparent with the decision to open the UOG Triton Citrus farm in Yigo.  This is a unique characteristic for Yigo to grow on and celebrate as it is one of the most ideal locations to grow it in  .

4. The experts at the University of Guam Outreach and Extension Office, Department of Agriculture, Farmers Cooperative Association of Guam and Guam Visitors Bureau support our mission and encourage residents in Yigo and throughout Guam to plant fruits and trees that will grow well in their area.

5. Citrus is a GREAT tasting Fruit enjoyed all over Guam and the world! It is Mungge' ("delicious" in the native Chamorro language)

6. Citrus is HEALTHY!  It is high in vitamin C which is known to help fight off diseases and even cancer.

7. Citrus is a primary ingredient in Guam's unofficial national dish, KELAGUEN.  It is a cultural food enjoyed by locals, guests and people throughout the world.  WITHOUT CITRUS there is NO KELAGUEN! Also, without Calamansi Arrozcaldo wouldn't be complete...

8. Citrus is enjoyed in an array of foods from delicious BEVERAGES, MAIN COURSE MEALS to DESSERTS.  It is so versatile and a widely used fruit in many cultures from Chamorro, Filipino etc...

9. This festival is brought to you by the support and approval of the Yigo Mayor, Vice Mayor, Yigo Mayor's Planning Council and most especially the Yigo Goodwill and Spirit Association / Yigo Citrus Festival Committee and Yigo Community.   We're excited to begin our mission and celebrate the citrus harvest with you.
